Los Angeles to Brisbane to Cairns - Monday - Wednesday, 10 June - 12 June

Well, the sign lied. We never left LAX until 1:35 am. That put us 2 hours delayed. The flight was VERY long. Read a little, slept, a bit, and tried to forget that we were in this capsule for 14 hours.

We arrived in Brisbane 2 hours late and missed our connection, of course. After clearing immigration and customs, we claimed our luggage and headed to find out how we were going to get to Cairns (Cannes). They had booked us on a 2:05 flight. So rechecked the luggage and took the shuttle to the domestic terminal. At the Qantas service desk they gave us a $20.gift card for food. We passed an hour or so at little restaurant, Bar Roma that served up sandwiches, pasta, nachos and you name it. Watched a bit of the Pirates game until the rain delay. Another loss chalked up.

It was very close to our gate so it worked out fine. But the wait was a bit longer than expected. Just a 20 minute delay this time. It was a 2 hour flight to Cairns and finally finished the Bryson book and slept for a bit. Got into Cairns just a bit before 5 and were met by our tour leader, Michelle Lemay. She has a great sense of humor and should be fun to be with. She also seems organized which is a plus

We had a 6:00 group meeting where everyone introduced themselves. There is a preponderance of teachers in our group of 27 - a really great size.

Off to dinner at the hotel at the Bushfire Grill, a Brazilian type steakhouse. The meat was great, including the kangaroo. It is a bit chewy, but was very good. Also on the menu were lamb, chicken, pork, sausage, and even a stew of calamari, mussels, and fish.

Upstairs to our hotel room to get somewhat organized for the ‘morrow.
